3 countries visited (Germany, Austria & Italy).
3 Route guidebooks, Via Claudia Augusta (in German), Munich to Venice Cycle Route (in English) & the Donau (Danube) route (in Dutch if all languages-it was donated by a Spanish couple!)
130hrs in the saddle
24 days cycle touring
1 day MTB in the Dolomites
4 days hiking
6 days being a vegetable/ sightseeing/ travelling
Where did I sleep?
2 nights warm showers hosts (thanks Verena!)
20 nights camping
12 nights hotels/guesthouses/refugios
2 stacks. Day 1 with the lost cleat screw, the damage: small cuts & buises on my leg. Biggest one was on the MTB (you saw the crying video on FB yeah?) where I went head first down an embankment with the bike on top of me. The result: some gnarly hip & bum bruises, and my shoulder's still not happy. But hey, my head avoided the mess, and the bike was fine!
2 Tent poles broken
1 sleeping mat killed
1 pillow ripped
1 lost water bottle
1 handlebar bag replaced
4 fingernails trashed, 2 half trashed.
0 flat tyres. Well except the one on the MTB on top of the mountain. That sucked. But my bike Mo was puncture free!! Though he did have a bulge in his front tyre in day 1, nothing a deflate and reinflate couldn't fix!
The weather & the trail & the sights
2 days of getting drenched in the rain (Sooo lucky!)
25+ days of over 30 degrees
4-5 days of crap headwinds
5 times I cried
1 time I had to remove panniers to get up a mountain (1km in 1.5hrs!)
5 times the trail was much better for goats than 36kg bikes!
1 naked fisherman
1 couple shagging in the backseat in a remote carpark
1 snake (unrelated to the previous 2)
11 Aldi (Hofer's) visited
100's slices of prosciutto eaten
4 days dry bread was eaten for dinner (I'm sooo lazy sometimes!)
8 days dry bread and a muesli bar was eaten for breaky
9 gelato eaten (I'm embarrassed at myself on this one! So many missed opportunities!)
7 full pizzas
8 plates of gnocchi
1 schnitzel (yuck. I forgot i don't like pork or veal it was one of those!)
1 Jar of Nutella (again disappointing, but it only comes in glass jars and they are heavy!!)
10 hotel breakfast buffets (wooo!)
20 mini babybel cheeses
8 Aldi premade salads (need these in Oz!)
6 boxes of muesli bars
Lost count of # of crossaints! Amazing!
50+ litres of bubbly water (at least 1.5L a day, sooo awesome in the heat!
25+ cans of coke (can of happiness!)
1 peach to outdo any other peach in the world! Plus plenty more which were almost as good!
Countless bruised bananas and apples (must stop riding over bumps!!)
25 mini Milky Way chocolate thingy (mmmm family pack!)
6 magnesium drink tablets (should have had more!)
1 multivitamin drink tablet (this bastard tainted my water bottle for days, wasn't doing that again!)
3 beers. Sad state of affairs.
12 red wines
1 grappa. 1 is TOO many!!
15 slices of plum cake (I'll be having more before I leave too! )
2 coffees. The second the size of a soup bowl. I hate coffee!
1 load of washing done in a real washing machine & dryer. I usually just hand washed the days dirty gear in the shower. And dried it on the back of the bike the next day. Unless I'm in a hotel, then the place looks like a Chinese laundry!
2 days I didn't shower. Even I'm surprised at this I was hoping to get more feral! Most days it was the only way to cool off!
5 times the bike got love. Bit of a chain clean and lube was the extent of it. I did adjust the back brakes after weeks of squealing (thanks YouTube!)...pleased with myself on that one! only had to add air to tyres 2 times 😊
On a scale of 1-Epic, they are a 9! Not quite as knife edge as the last bike tour, but still a sense of pride is felt! I've also added some wonderful shoulder tans from my racerback singlets, a great watch mark and a permanently red nose!
Bine & Ek who fed me dinner and breaky!
